Many carpet manufacturers use an oil based bitumen backing material which will take many thousands of years to biodegrade. When you consider approximately 300,000 tonnes of carpet are sent to landfill every year, the scale of the problem is evident. Thankfully a range of carpet products are now available containing high amounts of recycled content and importantly, a natural rubber based backing that will biodegrade in less than 10 years.
