Certified Timber
Overview of the Chain of Custody
Chain of Custody is the unbroken path which products take from the forest to the consumer, including all stages of manufacturing, transportation and distribution. Chain of Custody certification provides evidence that the certified product originates from certified, well-managed forests, and verifies that these products are not mixed with products from uncertified forests at any point in the supply chain. An independent, accredited body assesses each process the timber passes through to ensure that the control system meets the strict requirements of the certification scheme.
Build Center Timber Policy
This timber policy is specific to branches that have gained Chain of Custody certification. However, it is used as a best practice guide at all Build Center branches.
Wolseley UK has implemented a chain of custody procedure to ensure compliance with the Forest Stewardship Council (F.S.C.) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forestry Certification (PEFC) criteria. As part of this system it is the policy of Wolseley UK to avoid using wood that has been illegally harvested. The Company will not knowingly use timber listed on the CITES Register (Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species) or timber from contentious sources.
Management will be responsible for implementing this policy and the Management Representative has the day-to-day responsibility to ensure that this statement is carried out and that certification of our chain of custody is maintained to the highest level. If it is demonstrated that Wolseley UK is using wood from such illegal sources, we will promptly take appropriate actions, including stopping purchases from such sources for products covered by this policy.
Wolseley UK is committed to making best efforts to ensure that the company's percentage based claim is maintained and that the percentage of certified material bought and sold increases in line with our documented buying plan. We will work closely with all of our suppliers to encourage greater use of certified timber and panel products so that our continual improvement programme can be sustained.
On some products, where certified material is as yet unavailable, we will continue to seek alternative sources or work with the supplying company to implement their own chain of custody within given and agreed time-scales. Wolseley UK will work with our certification body to ensure that all criteria required by the FSC and the PEFC are met and that any non-conformances are corrected without delay.
