Cobiax is being used in the construction of the first floor in the south side gallery to allow for wider spans without support columns. Cobiax arrives on site as precast concrete slabs with cages of hollow plastic spheres fixed on top to reduce the amount of concrete that needs to be used for the flooring. The slab weight is reduced by 35% by including the plastic spheres which fill the non structural space. This reduced slab weight allows for the wider spans without the need for support columns which can take up valuable space.
One of the main advantages of using Cobiax is that far less concrete is needed and with concrete production being a very energy intensive process this is a great move towards a more sustainable building. There are many other advantages such as a reduced cost due to a volume reduction and reduced bracing, lower transport costs and quick installation.
