ECD Architects is a London-based practice offering architecture and master planning services, together with energy and environmental consultancy through our sister company, ECD Project Services. Jointly, we currently employ around thirty staff, including the two founding directors. The practice has been established since 1981 and has completed over one hundred built projects, from single dwellings to major university buildings.
We have extensive experience in a variety of building sectors including residential, education, commercial, arts, leisure and healthcare. Our client base ranges from local authorities, housing associations and developers to public companies and universities.
We are committed to contemporary, contextual and environmentally responsible architecture, always with a professional understanding of commercial realities and the needs of the wider community. We aim to create added value for our clients through design quality and a concern for the lifetime performance and sustainability of the built environment.
ECD were appointed in 2005 to develop the Wolseley UK brief for a showcase building that would embody their ambitions for a sustainable building materials and technologies supply chain. We have since worked closely with their SBC team to design a building that fulfils their need for flexible gallery space, audio-visual resources, administration facilities and hospitality accommodation. This has all been orchestrated within an exciting envelope and landscape that overtly displays and demonstrates the principles and practices of sustainable building design.
Mark Elton, BSc(Hons) DipArch RIBA
Associate Director
Mark has considerable experience in a range of residential, education and commercial projects and he has developed expertise in all forms of sustainable architectural design. Mark has been involved in the SBC project from the outset, responsible for both the concept design and the specification of materials and products in the building. He will continue his close involvement through to completion and beyond. "It has been a great opportunity and pleasure to be involved in the design and delivery of this exciting project and, ultimately, to contribute to the creation of the Wolseley UK sustainable supply chain. I hope that it will have a significant role in bringing sustainable building design into the mainstream, through greater exposure to both contractors and clients and hopefully a reduction in costs through the economies of scale."
Vaila Morrison, BSc(Hons) PgDip RIBA
Project Architect
Prior to joining ECD, Vaila gained extensive experience in sustainable development and low-carbon design solutions, including the use of geothermal heating, which she has put to good use in the SBC project. Getting involved at the scheme design stage, Vaila has successfully steered the project through the planning, detailed design development and tender processes, and will now take it forward through the construction phase. "Accommodating so many sustainable products, materials and technologies within one building design has been a great challenge. The reward will come from seeing the building grow on site and on-line simultaneously, and to watch the impact it will have on the construction industry."
