Energy Performance in Building Directive
Reducing energy consumption and eliminating wastage are among the main goals of the European Union (EU) and the EU has introduced legislation to ensure that less energy is consumed.
A key part of this legislation is the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) which requires all EU countries to enhance their building regulations and to introduce energy certification schemes for buildings. All countries are also required to have inspections of boilers and air-conditioners.
In the UK, the EPBD is best known for the Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) which are required when homes or other buildings are sold or let.
Like most legislative mechanisms, the EPBD is subject to amendments and the directive is currently subject to a proposed recast which will seek to extend the scope of the Directive, strengthen certain provisions, and give the public sector a leading role in promoting energy efficiency.
