Britain’s biggest retailer has announced plans to enter into the house building market with a proposal to build several ‘mini-villages’ in locations around London. The developments which naturally include a Tesco store will create jobs and provide accommodation for hundreds of families in the four selected locations.
The first schemes will be in Woolwich, Streatham, Bromley-by-Bow and Dartford, Kent. The Woolwich project includes plans for a supermarket, library, civic centre and 900 homes – courtesy of Tesco's development arm, Spen Hill. Approval is next month expected for 400 homes, a primary school, hotel and park next to the Olympic Park in Bromley-by-Bow, east London.
There are also plans for a series of smaller mixed homes, shops and leisure developments in Ipswich and the North East.
Tesco’s plans were boosted last month when Lambeth Council approved its plan to build 200 homes, a bus depot and ice rink in Streatham, South London.
